In the previous post we have talked about the definition of a mentor and why you should seriously consider having one. This post, i will focus on what do you need to look for in a mentor so that you are confident that they are the right match for you.
For you to choose a mentor you need to ensure they have the following 8 qualities:
1- Noble values
Mentors should be trustworthy, honest, disciplined, courageous, humble, and supportive.
2- Consistency
Their actions are consistent with their values.
Their talk or advice is consistent with their actions. Do they “practice what they preach”?
Their attitude and manners towards people are consistent regardless of their status, age, gender, nationality, etc. Essentially, how is this mentor treating the CEO versus the janitor for example.
3- Generous
Mentors are generous with their time, with their knowledge, and with their manners.
You don’t want a mentor who doesn’t spend time with you, who uphold information from you, or someone who is stingy.
4- Active listener
A mentor should listen to you more than talk. They should be involved in the conversation, prompting you for clarity or more information. They keep their phone away when they are talking to you and are not distracted.
5- Invite you to think
Good mentors are not here to tell you what to do and how to think. Rather, they poke you with questions that challenge you to think and consider things from different perspectives. They encourage you to shift your paradigm and see the situations from different angles. They guide you with information from their knowledge and experience that you can use to form your next set of actions and conclusions.
6- Enthusiastic
Talking with them fills you with energy and endless possibilities. They are enthusiastic and genuinely want the best for you. They encourage you to take actions and march forward.
You can see it from their eyes and how they talk to you.
7- Follow up
They follow up on you regularly to ask you about your progress. They invite you to ask follow-up questions, and reach out to them if you found yourself stuck.
8- They have what you are looking for
The last important thing you need to keep in mind when looking for a mentor, is that the mentor should posses what you are looking for. Whether it is wealth, excellent career, fit body, loving relationship, strong faith, etc.
It is very important that you choose a mentor that enhances you and not cause you to become a lesser version of yourself. Remember, you are the average of the five people you spend time with.
Next we will be talking about the different types of mentors there are. Stay tuned!
